Image Credit: Chris Walter/WireImage.com; Ebet Roberts Redferns/Getty Images; Lester Cohen/Wireimage.comThe Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just announced its latest class of nominees via press release. The list of 15 artists covers a broad range of eras and sounds, from rock (Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi) to pop (Neil Diamond, Chic, Donna Summer) to folk (Donovan) to hip-hop (Beastie Boys, LL Cool J) and more. Inductees will be announced in December and honored at a ceremony next March.
As always, plenty of eligible acts didn’t make this first round. Last week names like Rush, T. Rex, the Smiths, Joan Jett, and KISS came up as potential nominees; none of them got the nod this time. (UPDATE: Rush documentary director responds to Hall of Fame snub: “It’s unfortunate”)
Take a look at the full list of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees after the jump. Then let us know who you think the most egregious omissions are. Bear in mind that eligible artists must have debuted in 1985 or earlier. And, hey, if there’s anyone you’re glad the Hall did nominate — personally, I was psyched to see Chic, Darlene Love, and the Beastie Boys on the list — let us know about that, too.
2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees:
Alice Cooper
Beastie Boys
Bon Jovi
Chic
Neil Diamond
Donovan
Dr. John
J. Geils Band
LL Cool J
Darlene Love
Laura Nyro
Donna Summer
Joe Tex
Tom Waits
Chuck Willis

And the first official cancellation of the 2010-11 TV season is… a real bummer. Fox has pulled the plug on its critically adored con-man drama Lone Star after two low-rated episodes.
Lie to Me—which wasn’t expected to kick off its third season until later this fall—takes over the show’s Monday-at-9 time slot beginning next week.
Lone Star got off to a disastrous start last week, averaging just over 4 million viewers. The depressing numbers prompted series creator Kyle Killen to pen an open letter to fans urging them to tune in for episode 2. “For [Lone Star] to survive we’re going to have to pull off a minor miracle,” he wrote. “Statistically, new shows tend to lose viewers in their second week. We’re aiming to gain them. In fact, screw it, let’s just double our audience.”
Unfortunately, viewership for last night’s episode sank to 3.2 million viewers, sealing the show’s fate.
Production on Lone Star will cease immediately, confirms a 20th Century Fox spokesperson. “We will have shot five completed episodes after the pilot,” says the rep, “and will not complete principal photography on episode 106.” It’s not clear what will happen to the unaired episodes.

Whether it is a party or formal ceremony, it would take some effort to imagine a corporate event without the element of entertainment. An entire corporate event in its broad sense (including corporate retreats, corporate Christmas parties and non-cash incentives), may seem nothing more than entertainment. The element of entertainment is also present in the schedules of such events as corporate meetings, sales conferences, product launches, trade shows and so on (why not start a conference with a stunning lights show?). In any case, entertaining programmes are far more than just having fun.
Corporate events make people come together; meanwhile an entertaining programme may bring great benefits for the company. To be more precise, corporate entertainment is a powerful tool to create and sustain the desired relationships among the employees or between the company and its clients or business associates and other groups of people depending on the purpose of the event.
For instance, non-cash incentives or corporate retreats are ideal to enhance relationships between the company and its staff. Moreover, as these are often given for groups, communication among the participants is thus inspired. Group retreats afford more time for personal interaction, so employees can to get to know one another as human beings and not just as co-workers. This ‘human factor’ is vital in corporate environment that can otherwise appear utilitarian.
Similarly, entertaining team building events, such as canoeing, sailing, karting, snowmobiling, and other team activities help to forge the spirit of community. Team building activities challenge teamwork skills needed to accomplish common goals and teach ways of co-operation, which can prove a useful experience back at work.
In the case of business meetings, an entertaining programme is a way to build business relationships. As a shared experience, it allows for a relaxed atmosphere during negotiations and increases the probability of a beneficial agreement.
Last but not least, an entertaining programme arranged for clients is a powerful tool of motivation. Feeling appreciated, customers will repay with loyalty.
Thus, the element of fun facilitates communication and tightens bonds among people, which is very important for a company who wants to maintain a positive, upbeat atmosphere at work and smooth relationships with the people outside the company: business partners, customers as well as the public.

Entertainment. A term as broad as the Grand Canyon, as deep as the Atlantic Ocean and as delightful as a kid who’s just been let loose in a candy store. Ever since man can remember, he has been in search of new ways to be entertained. In the old Roman days, it was seeing a lion take off the head of a gladiator. In modern times, it’s reality television. There are more types of entertainment than you can possibly imagine. Some of it, even suitable for children.
In the following series of articles we’re going to try to stay away from the usual dull definitions of certain types of entertainment, like “What is a play?” and questions of that nature. Instead, we’re going to focus on some of the greatest entertainers and events of our times. These events cover a broad range of categories from TV to movies to music to theater, to the circus and so on. Entertainment itself may very well be one subject where you could write a thousand books on it, all the size of War And Peace. And let’s not forget historical re-enactments as a form of entertainment as well, though not traditionally considered theater. Many of these re-enactments take place in historically significant cities and towns throughout the world, especially in the United States where Civil War re-enactments are regularly held in towns like Gettysburg.
Getting back to more traditional forms of entertainment, we’ve had the pleasure of hearing such great singers perform in concerts from all musical styles. We’ve heard the great performances of Enrico Caruso, one of the greatest operatic tenors of all time. We’ve heard the greatest rock and roll band ever, The Beatles, perform live at Shea Stadium in New York. We’ve heard Clay Aikin perform the Neil Sedaka song, “Solitaire”, after which Neil Sedaka said, “I just lost my song forever”. We’ve heard Cher sing one of the greatest versions of the National Anthem ever at the Super Bowl. And of course there was Robert Preston, arguably the greatest Music Man of all time, singing “76 Trombones”.
But singers don’t hold a monopoly on the entertainment industry. We’ve seen some great acting performances as well, both live and on TV and in movies. We’ve seen George C. Scott’s electrifying performance as General Patton and then his refusal to accept the award for best actor at one of the most talked about Oscars of all time. We saw Gregory Peck becoming Atticus Finch in “To Kill A Mockingbird”, a performance that would win him an AFI award as the greatest hero in movies of all time. We saw Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh in the classic movie “Gone With The Wind” where Gable delivered one of the greatest and best known lines in movie history, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”.
These moments are but a speck in the vast timeline of entertainment history; a history so rich in moments that a time capsule of them would need to be buried on a planet ten times the size of our own Earth. In the coming articles we’ll take a more in depth look at some of the greatest entertainers and events of our time.
You won’t want to miss this.

Studies have shown that Hidden Gems of the Week, EW.com’s collection of reader-submitted ridiculata, is the best way to enjoy Dancing With the Stars without ever having to turn it on. It’s a visual feast of sparkles, fringe, and flesh. Ready to go down the rabbit hole? Behold this bountiful smattering of Visible Gems!
MVG (MOST VALUABLE GEM): Ommmmmmmm
“Tom in the lotus position–impressive!” –orville, endorsed by Katja, JennyH, Potato Bug, A, and Jean, who woke her computer up just to make sure someone had posted this
“In a startling turn of events, Under-Enthusiastic Bongo Guy is sort of smiling while Enthusiastic Chimes Lady is so super-focused on her chimes that her face has almost no expression whatsoever! WTF, ECL?! –EW.com’s Fringe Fairy
“Hey–Bongo Guy took the note! Much more enthusiastic this week. But, you’re right Annie – no one puts Enthusiastic Chimes Lady in the corner.” –orville
“When Michael Bolton first appeared coming down the staircase in that leopard jacket I thought it was Rod Stewart.” –glenn
“Hidden Gem Nomination: There is a production assistant of some sort right behind Sarah Palin when they show her after Bristol’s dance. He is making the BEST “I can’t believe this is my life” face!” –Anon, endorsed by orville
“Bristol Palin’s dress reminded me of those Cupcake Dolls from like the early ‘90s. It’s probably a good thing that she skipped that frosting hat though.” –kt, endorsed by Katja
“I thought it looked like one of those bath scrubbies. You know, the big body puff thingies?” –prplrose5
“Bristol Palin was rocking the Miss Piggy look with her purple dress, purple elbow length satin gloves, and sausage curls.” –Kate
“Hidden gem of the week has to be whenever fish mouth Mark Ballas kept trying to kiss Bristol on the cheek and Bristol completely ignored him and didn’t respond. Priceless. Not everyone wants slobber on them, Mark.” –Corran, endorsed by Emma and Katja
“After Bristol’s dance was over, behind the judges this guy in the audience was staring up into the heavens like he was waiting for his alien ship to pick him up.” –Abby
“That guy looked like Lane from Big Brother!” –Addison
“Did Mark give his dad a kiss in the skybox after his dance? If so…adorable!” –KWo
“Right after Brandy and Maks got their scores the camera panned to Sarah Palin and her youngest daughter. That little girl looked beyond miserable to be in Planet Mirrorballus and it cracked me up!!” –Liz
“Hidden Gem: I had to salute Anna Tre-BUN-skaya’s glittery dog tags! I wonder if I can buy some at dontaskdonttell.gov?” –iggy
“I also loved the glitter on the heels of her shoes!” –Megan, endorsed by jillibeans
Brady kids! –orville. “Brady kids” plural? I saw Thindy. Who elthe wath there?” –Potato Bug. “Cindy Brady/Susan Olsen in the house!! Surely she’s more loved than Sarah Palin, yet no Q&A with her?” –Scooter
“Mrs Garrett from The Facts of Life sitting behind Carrie Ann.” –MLM
“Not sure if you consider this a Hidden Gem or just rude, but no applause from Karina “pinch face” after Jennifer and Derek’s dance. Come on lady give them a fake golf clap or something they deserved it!” –plygal
“Another one, Mrs. Brady’s not so happy look after Jennifer’s dance. If looks could kill!” –gigi
“The picture of the judges during Karina and The Situation’s rehearsal. Do they not have any better decor than that?” –Karen, endorsed by LP
“ECL and Bongo guy were definitely overtaken this week by Stoic Violin Lady (sitting next to the doghouse during Michael Bolton’s number) She started a sway but held herself back” –MLM, endorsed by gigi
“Carrie Ann’s reaction to Bruno and Len fighting over Bolton’s dance.” –Anthony
“During Michael Bolton’s dance, they used dog bone pictures in the background. In certain camera angles, you could only see the bottom half of the bone and it looked like, shall we say…the lower half of a man’s anatomy!” –Baby’s Corner
“The Ultimate Hidden Gem: Bruno’s 3 paddle, I don’t think it has ever been used before!” –glenn, JH
“Annie, I was the one who likened Erin’s purple dress last season to the feather duster from Beauty & the Beast…but I must say tonight Lacey left her in the dust with her quickstep dress! I also claim bonus points since Len pointed it out!!” –Susan
“The look on Lacey’s face when Kyle said he might have a crush on Carrie Ann too.” –LP
“During Audrina and Tony’s dance, there was a man who gave them a spontaneous round of applause after they did a few steps in front of him” –MLM
(Update: According to commenter Tom, this is Brandy and Ray J’s dad!)
“Hidden gem: Audrina almost falling out of her dress when she was getting up off the floor in the least graceful way possible at the end of her dance. Seriously, she looked like a 3 year old trying to get out a sandbox.” –badbaum
“How about the almost not so hidden gem of Audrina’s boob.” –jen
“An older woman right as Tom was signing off the show dressed in her own dancing with the stars outfit, skin colored with black lace…pretty fancy!” –Emma
LIFE-AFFIRMING GEM (LAG)
“Ok, so this isn’t exactly from the show… but prior to watching with my boyfriend I told him we had to look for hidden gems, and when Cheryl Burke broke out her tush undies during the first dance he got really excited and exclaimed ‘ooooh, is that a golden moment?!?’ A golden moment (and a hidden gem) indeed!” –LP, endorsed by JennyH, caryn, gigi, and EW.com’s Fringe Fairy

Lindsay Lohan reportedly checked into a Southern California substance-abuse rehab program late Monday, according to People. On Sept. 24, the 24-year-old actress posted bail and was released from a Lynwood, Calif., jail after being taken into custody the prior night for failing a court-mandated drug test (and thereby violating her probation). Lohan’s next formal probation hearing is set for Oct. 22. She most recently spent 23 days at UCLA Medical Center’s live-in rehab program.
